Inspecta-Shield Plus's LEED Accreditation

This document is written to address the product, Inspecta-Shield Plus® (ISP), which is manufactured by International Fire-Shield, Inc. (IFS) and how the product relates to LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Version 3.0 and more specifically, Credit 4.2, within the LEED Rating System.

ISP is a water penetrating flame retardant coating used for enhancing a specific structure or a substrate's resistance to fire and heat.

The LEED rating program, Indoor Environmental Quality Section EQ Credit 4.2 Low-Emitting Materiels; Paints and Coatings, does not specifically address flame retardant penetrating coatings. However, it is IFS's position that ISP, due to the nature of its composition and use, fits into the category of Paints and Coatings.

The intent of 4.2; Low-Emitting Materials: Patings and Coatings 1 Point is to reduce the level VOC's and require that products used within this category have VOC's equal to or less than the content limits established in Green Seal Standard GS-11, Paints 1st edition, which is superseded by Green Seal's 2nd edition dated May 12, 2008.

Credit 4.2 also requires that other coatings including wood finishes, floor coatings, stains, sealers, and other coatings not exceed the VOC limits established by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD)Rule 113. Archetectural Drawings.

The Green Seal Standard, in conjuction with the SCAQMD Rule 113 for flat coatings (under which ISP qualifies) limits the VOC content of a product to 50 g/l.

Using the calculaitons per SCAQMD, ISP has a VOC content of0.0 g/l, and therefore ISP complies with the intent of EQ Credit 4.2: Low-Emitting Materials: Paints.
